The Invisalign Journey – Your Pathway To A Great Looking Smile

Are you considering Invisalign to straighten your teeth? If so, you’re certainly not alone. Over 12 million people, including more than 1.4 million teens, have used Invisalign clear aligners to achieve the smile of their dreams. But what is it, and how does it work? Follow along with us as we explain the Invisalign journey, and hopefully, by the time you’ve finished reading, you’ll have a better idea of whether it’s the right treatment for you.

So, what is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a brand name for an innovative aligner technology used to straighten teeth. During the course of treatment, patients receive a series of clear aligners or trays worn over the teeth like a mouthguard. Invisalign is available to adults and teens alike and is an effective and functional alternative treatment to conventional orthodontic treatments like metal ‘bracket and wire’ braces.

Invisalign aligners are preferred by those looking to straighten teeth discreetly. Because Invisalign aligners use clear BPA-free polyurethane trays that are practically undetectable, no one but your dentist needs to know your secret.

Aditionally the clear aligners are easily removed so there are no worries about giving up the foods you love to eat or participating in your favourite sports.

And the best thing about Invisalign? They start transforming your smile from the moment you begin wearing them.

Invisalign offers speedy results

Some patients start seeing results within a few weeks of their treatment. In fact, Invisalign’s patented SmartTrack material ensures teeth are moved comfortably and predictably.

Invisalign helps you to:

  • Straighten crooked teeth
  • Close large gaps between teeth
  • Make space even where the teeth are crowded
  • Correct bite issues including overbites, underbites, crossbites, and,
  • Feel more confident about smiling

How Invisalign works

Patients work through a series of aligner trays custom-made using advanced 3D printing technology. Invisalign can gradually move the teeth up, down, or rotate them, applying pressure to move them into optimal alignment over time. When the last aligner has been worn and discarded, the teeth should be visibly straighter. Occasionally, patients may need a few more aligners to fine-tune their new smile.

So, yes, Invisalign really works. And it can work for you, too.

How well it works depends on your case and what your Invisalign dentist recommends.

Are you ready to see what a typical treatment journey with Invisalign looks like? Let’s take a closer look and the before, during and after concept of your Invisalign experience.

The Invisalign Journey – before treatment

Before committing to clear aligners, it’s essential to know if Invisalign is a suitable treatment for you or your teen. Invisalign is typically recommended for minor to moderate orthodontic treatment, and if your case is more complicated, fixed metal braces may be a better option. If you’re in a hurry, you can start by answering a few quick questions to gauge if Invisalign is right for you, but if you’re still unclear after the test, you can find out for certain when you book your free Invisalign Smile Consultation here at Foxbury Dental.

Here’s what to expect when you book

  • A personalised smile assessment to assess suitability
  • A 3D teeth scan using the latest Itero technology to personalise your treatment plan. Painless and straightforward – no messy impressions here!
  • Any tweaks and adjustments can be made virtually in real-time, so you can show us just how you’d like your smile to look.
  • Once your treatment plan is finalised, it’s just a question of waiting for your new aligners to be printed.

To help you decide, Dr Carmen Jimenez will put you at ease and be happy to answer any questions. She will explain the process, talk about how long it’s likely to take, and, of course, discuss the cost. She has plenty of Invisalign experience, so your smile is in safe hands.

What to expect during Invisalign treatment

Once your Invisalign trays are ready, you will be asked back to the clinic to collect them and start transforming your smile. This visit is a chance to try on your first aligner with a dentist present. Dr Jimenez will check the aligners fit properly, answer any questions you may have, and discuss the next steps of your Invisalign treatment.

After that, routine visits to the clinic will be required every 4-8 weeks to monitor your progress and ensure everything is going to plan and working as it should.

For the best results, aligners should be worn between 20 and 22 hours a day and removed to eat and drink anything but water and to brush and floss your teeth.

The aligners are replaced for the next set in the series every two weeks or how often the dentist recommends.

Teeth whitening

The dentist will also show patients how to whiten their teeth during treatment by filling their trays with the supplied whitening gel and wearing them over their teeth as instructed.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

Invisalign takes an average of 12 months but depending on the complexity of their treatment, some patients can complete treatment in as little as 4 months, whereas others may take up to 18 months to achieve a straight smile.

Is Invisalign treatment painful?

Patients may expect some slight discomfort with every new aligner but don’t worry. It’s a good thing and shows that treatment is working. Besides, any discomfort can be managed using over-the-counter pain medication and any discomfort will typically subside within a couple of days as your teeth get use to the new aligner.

As a top tip, we recommend changing to a new aligner just before going to bed and taking a painkiller to help you sleep through the discomfort.

After your Invisalign treatment

Congratulations. We hope you love your beautifully straight smile. So, what comes next?

Having put all that effort into straightening your teeth, it would be a crime for them to move back again, so it’s necessary to wear a retainer to keep them in place.

Initially, it may be necessary to wear the retainer full-time, but this will gradually reduce to night-time wear only.

The good news is there is no recovery period after Invisalign treatment. You’ll be smiling from the moment you discard your last aligner. All that’s left is to wear your new smile with pride.
